Ben is my 7 year old son, who happens to be on the Autism Spectrum. When Ben’s 5th birthday rolled around, he was excited to invite all of his classmates and “friends” to his party. The RSVP date came and went and I didn’t hear from any of his classmates’ parents- only family and close family friends were courteous enough to RSVP. I prepared a party for 30+ people not knowing how many would show up.

The day of the party rolled around, and besides those family members and close friends who responded, NO ONE from Ben’s class showed up. He was devastated that his so called “Friends” didn’t come. We still had an awesome party with our good friends and family, but Ben asks again and again why “none of my school friends” wanted to come to his party.

Fast forward to a few days ago, I read a post on Facebook about a girl (also on the Autism Spectrum) who had just experienced the same situation. Her mom was asking people to make and send homemade birthday cards to her daughter- so we did. I explained to Ben what happened, asked if he would like to make cards and he said “yes, mommy, and I would like to be that girl’s friend.” After we mailed the cards, he asked if I had any other kids who” felt like they didn’t have any friends” that we could make cards for…and here we are.

Kids on the Autism Spectrum often struggle socially, no matter how hard they try to fit in. I witness this with my son, and it is heartbreaking to watch. Ben is a loving kid who is incredibly empathetic and doesn’t want other kids to feel left out. This page was his idea, and I’m doing everything I can to help him help kids like him. He’s always loved to make cards (I’m a lucky mom!) and I have lots of craft supplies…so this seems like a good fit for us!

If you know of a child, Autism Spectrum or not, who is struggling socially and would like birthday cards from us, please fill out the contact form below . If you’d like me to share that information with the Ben’s Birthday Buddies community on Facebook to shower that child with cards, please let me know, otherwise they will receive homemade cards from my son and myself. We will try to fulfill all requests as quickly as possible, just keep in mind that between work and school we keep a busy schedule.

If you don’t have a child needing birthday wishes but want to help send them, please like Ben’s Birthday Buddies on Facebook as I’ll forward information when asked by parents/family members so we can shower them with cards.
